Activity 1: New Books for the Classroom Library


Tell students that the school council allocates a budget of $100 for the purchase of books for each class library. Group student in pairs and have them find 3 stores that sell books and compare prices and other costs, including delivery. Students must choose a store by considering the choice of books, the price of the books, and other costs and justify their decision.

Activity 2: A Souvenir Sweater


Present the following scenario to students:

The Grade 4 class would like to keep a memento of their year together and their teacher, Mrs. Dias, suggested that they do some research to find out about the price of sweaters.

During discussions (for example, in the form of Think-Pair-Share), encourage students to make a list of questions to be used in their research, such as:

  • Are all the sweaters the same?
  • Why are the prices so different?
  • What factors should you consider when purchasing sweaters (price, new materials, recycled materials, environmental impact, place of origin, shipping cost, and others)? Explain your answer.
  • Would the same factors be taken into consideration if the purchase was a tablet for the classroom? Explain your answer.
