Activity 1: Levels of Government and Their Services

Place students in teams of 2 or 3. Ask groups to identify the types of taxes collected by municipal and provincial governments.

Ask them to explain the importance of the taxes collected in order to offer the different services that the municipal and provincial government provide in their community.

Activity 2: Services in the Province

Ask students to compare the services available in different communities in Ontario, including band councils. Students should explain the factors that influence the existence of these services. Ask students to describe other factors that may influence the services being offered as well as identify how taxes may be used to create a fair distribution of services across Ontario.
