Activity 1: Newsletter


Ask students to find three Canadian companies that offer discounts to their customers when they subscribe to a newsletter using an email address.

Then suggest that students think through the lens of the company and the lens of its customers to when responding to the following questions:

  • Company perspective:
    By surveying your peers, determine the advantages and disadvantages of using client email to share information and promotions.
  • Customer perspective:
    What are the advantages and disadvantages of using email reception to receive information from companies?

Finally, ask students the following question:
How do you think the advancement of technology has impacted the introduction of loyalty programs? Explain your reasoning. Compare your results with those of students in your class.

Activity 2: Getting the Most for Your Money


Ask students to compare the cost of a technology device (computer, tablet, video game, etc.) on different companies' websites using an Internet search. Encourage them to find loyalty programs, discounts, or coupons that would reduce the cost of purchasing this technology.

Then ask students the following questions:

  • If no price reduction program is available, what criteria would you use to determine the best buy for the device?
  • Would you be willing to purchase used technology? Explain your reasoning.
  • What types of items would you buy used. Explain why.
