C1.1 Recognize and describe repeating, increasing and decreasing sequences, including sequences found in everyday life.

Activity: the talking picture (repeated and increasing pattern sequences)

Prepare cards with the images below. Form teams of three students. Give the cards to each team. The students must "make the images speak" in mathematical language, i.e. using the vocabulary associated with the theme: patterns, terms, ascending/descending, rank, etc.

Each team is responsible for presenting and explaining one image. Support students so that vocabulary is accurate and question team members as needed.

Sample Questions

  • Where do you see the pattern?
  • Is the pattern repeating?
  • Is the sequence increasing/decreasing? Why is this?

Examples of images for the cards

  • Bottom view of a staircase which creates a form of a square.

  • Nesting dolls in order.

  • Eiffel Tower.

  • View of a building with a structure on the upper floor, overhanging

  • A decreasing Nonnumeric sequence of pebbles placed one on top of the other: 5, 4, 3, 2, one.

  • A numeric sequence of decreasing numbers: 100, 98, 94, 88, 80, 70.
