D2.2 Make and test predictions about the likelihood that the categories in a data set from one population will have the same frequencies in data collected from a different population of the same size.
Activity 1: Predict and Verify the Likelihood of an Event if Data is Collected From a Different Population (Same Age Group)
Present students with the "Means of Transportation Used to Get to School by Class 1A Students" tally table.
| Means of Transportation Used to Get to School by Class 1A Students | |
|---|---|
| Bicycle | ![]() |
| School bus | ![]() |
| Car | ![]() |
| Walk | ![]() |
Ask students to predict what the outcome would be if they asked the same question to 20 students in another grade 1 class in the school. Ask them to explain their prediction.
Ask questions such as:
- What do you notice?
- How can you verify your prediction?
- What would happen if you asked the grade 5 students in your school this question? How can you justify your prediction?
- If our survey was done at another time of year (for example, in February), would the data be the same?
- Did you make an accurate prediction? How do you know?
Allow students to gather information from a grade 1 class in their school to verify their prediction.
Activity 2: Predict and Verify the Likelihood of an Event if Data is Collected From a Different Population (Different Age Group)
Present students with the pictograph "Number of Protein Foods in Grade 1 Students' Lunch Boxes".
Image Pictograph chart, titled “Number of Protein Foods in Grade One Student Lunch Boxes”, formed by four rows
numbered 0 through 3. Row 0: two smiley faces Row 1: Six Smileys Row 2: four smileys Row 3: eight smileys Legend: one smiley face equals one student
Ask students to predict what the outcome would be if they asked the same question to 20 students in a grade 6 class at the school. Ask them to explain their prediction.
Ask questions such as:
- What do you notice?
- How can you verify your prediction?
- What would happen if you asked students in another grade 1 class in your school? How can you justify your prediction?
- Did you make an accurate prediction? How do you know?
Allow students to gather information from a grade 6 class in their school to verify their prediction.
