E1.5 Give and follow directions for moving from one location to another.

Activity: An Extraordinary Drawing

  • Create a grid on the computer, making sure that the boxes are square, and put a capital X in one of the cells.
  • Save the grid in a file available to all students.
  • Have students open the file or open it in advance.
  • Give directions using the phrases to the right of, to the left of, above, below, and between so that students create a shape or drawing.
  • Students use the X key to mark an X in each cell they are directed to.

Example

image A grid composed of 16 equal squares, so 4 columns and 4 rows. We see an "X" in the second and third squares of the second row. There is an "X" in every square of the third row. Under the third one is written "already placed". The boxes in the fourth row are empty. Under the grid is written "I created a hat or a cake".
