C1.3 Determine pattern rules and use them to extend patterns, make and justify predictions, and identify missing elements in patterns.

Activity 1: Find the Missing Term

Ask students to observe the following repeating pattern.

A sequence of repetitive motif. The elements 4 and 9are missing. The sequence starts from yellow circle, red square, blue triangle, an interrogation mark, red square, blue triangle, yellow circle, red square, and interrogation mark.

Ask the following questions:

  • What is the term in the 4th row? How do you know?
  • What is the term in the 9th row? How do you know?
  • What would be the term in the 12th row?

Encourage students to describe the basic pattern as well as the attributes.

Summary

In this activity, students solve a problem by extending a growing number pattern using a calculator.

Materials

Directions

Provide each student with a copy of Appendix 3.2A and one copy of Appendix 3.2B. Read the legend with the students and ask them to complete the assignment in Appendix 3.2 B. Afterwards, discuss it together.
