B1.2 read and represent integers, using a variety of tools and strategies, including horizontal and vertical number lines

Activity 1: Whole Numbers in Our Daily Lives

Ask students in dyads to describe a situation that a negative integer could represent, for example -2.

Share the results with the class to identify the different possibilities. For example, I thought about the weather and owing money. I know that it is also possible to use two colours of tokens: one for negative integers and the other for positive ones.

Activity 2: Represent Whole Numbers with Tokens

Draw a number line from -10 to 10, and locate the following integers on the line: 2, -6, -8 and 7.
