E1.3 Use scale drawings to calculate actual lengths and areas, and reproduce scale drawings at different ratios.

Activity: Use and Reproduce a Scale Drawing

Example 1

Here is a scale drawing of a pool.

Image Scale drawing of a swimming pool. The width is 3 point 2 centimeters, the length is 6 point one centimeters and the depth is one point 3 centimeters.

  • Using the 1:100 scale, determine the area occupied by the pool in meters.
  • Make a scale drawing of the pool, using a scale of 1:50.

Example 2

Here is a drawing that represents identical windows in a scale of 1:20.

Determine the actual area of the two windows.

A plan of two windows, the width is “2” point “25” centimeters and the length is “7” point “5” centimeters.
